If certain transactions in your cryptocurrency account are temporarily unavailable, your withdrawal is placed under review or you are asked to provide additional information, this does not always mean that there is a technical error. These situations may arise due to
transaction limits, AML checks, identity verification requirements, risk assessments or other regulatory obligations.
Crypto asset service providers in Türkiye are subject to various obligations, including customer due diligence, the detection of suspicious transactions, the
Travel Rule, time and limit restrictions on transfers, and risk-based controls. Therefore, certain transactions undergoing automated or manual checks is part of the security and regulatory compliance process.
Why May Crypto Transactions Be Restricted?
There is no single reason why transactions may be restricted on a cryptocurrency exchange. A restriction may affect not only trading transactions but also cryptocurrency or Turkish lira deposits and withdrawals. Common reasons may include:
-
exceeding account or transaction limits,
-
incomplete or outdated identity information,
-
unusual transaction activity,
-
the need for additional information or documentation,
-
AML and risk checks,
-
a suspicious situation related to account security,
-
sanctions or high-risk transaction checks,
-
missing Travel Rule information.
The scope of a restriction is not the same in every case. While some checks affect only a specific withdrawal, certain features of the account may be temporarily restricted in other situations.
What Is an AML Check?
AML is the abbreviation for “Anti-Money Laundering” and refers to checks carried out within the scope of
preventing the laundering of proceeds of crime.
The purpose of AML checks is to prevent the financial system from being used for money laundering, terrorist financing or other illegal activities.
In Türkiye, crypto asset service providers are subject to various obligations under Law No. 5549 and the relevant MASAK regulations. MASAK’s current guidance also states that crypto asset service providers must implement these obligations using a
risk-based approach.
Therefore, additional reviews may be conducted when a transaction differs significantly from normal transaction patterns or presents additional risk indicators.
Why Might My Transaction Be Subject to an AML Check?
A transaction being placed under additional review does not directly mean that an illegal transaction has been carried out. Risk systems may assess the user profile, transaction history and characteristics of the transaction together rather than evaluating a single transaction in isolation. For example:
-
unusually high transaction volumes,
-
numerous money or cryptocurrency transfers within a short period,
-
activity that differs significantly from the user profile,
-
intensive fund inflows from different sources,
-
interactions with wallets considered high risk,
-
inconsistencies in sender or recipient information,
-
the need for further clarification regarding the purpose of the transaction
may require additional checks.
The important point is that
an AML check is not the same as an accusation of criminal activity. Financial institutions’ assessment of suspicious or unusual transactions is part of their legal compliance processes.
MASAK’s Suspicious Transaction Reporting Guide for crypto asset service providers also requires the assessment of different categories of suspicion, as well as transaction and account types specific to the industry.

Why Has My Account Been Restricted?
“Why has my account been restricted?” is one of the most common questions users encounter on cryptocurrency platforms. An account restriction may be based on various reasons, including:
-
suspicious activity related to account security,
-
incomplete identity verification,
-
failure to provide the requested information or documents,
-
a transfer considered risky,
-
an AML review,
-
sanctions checks,
-
suspected unauthorized access to the account.
Current cryptocurrency platform help centres also identify account security, legal requirements and suspicious transactions as some of the main reasons for account restrictions.
Therefore, an account restriction does not mean that the account has been permanently closed or that the user has been found to have committed a crime.
Why Can’t I Withdraw Cryptocurrency?
The reason why a cryptocurrency withdrawal is unavailable may differ from an account restriction. For example:
-
a regulatory waiting period of 48 or 72 hours,
-
a Travel Rule check,
-
a daily or monthly transfer limit,
-
an additional AML review,
-
a security check,
-
verification of wallet or transfer information, may temporarily prevent withdrawal from being completed.
Therefore, when you are unable to make a withdrawal, you should first determine whether the entire account or only the relevant transfer has been restricted.
Why Are Transaction Limits Applied?
Transaction, deposit or withdrawal limits may be applied by cryptocurrency platforms for different purposes. These limits may arise from:
-
regulatory requirements,
-
risk management policies,
-
the account’s verification level,
-
the transfer method used,
-
the technical characteristics of certain crypto assets.
MASAK’s current Guide for Crypto Asset Service Providers also separately addresses
time and limit restrictions on crypto asset transfers as part of compliance obligations.
Therefore, the presence of a limit does not always indicate a technical restriction. The transaction conditions provided by the platform and the notifications sent to the user should be reviewed to understand the source of the relevant limit.
Why Is a Transaction Not Completed When a Limit Is Exceeded?
When a transaction a user wishes to perform reaches the limit set for the account or transfer, the system may not allow the transaction to be completed.
Two different situations should be distinguished here:
-
A transaction limit is a predefined amount or transaction threshold.
-
An AML review means that the transaction is subject to a risk assessment.
Therefore, a transaction not being completed does not automatically mean that it has been flagged for an AML check. The user’s current transaction limits should be checked first.
Why Is Additional Information or Documentation Requested?
Customer information, transaction behaviour or risk profiles may change over time. Therefore, CoinTR may continuously monitor customer relationships and completed transactions within the scope of applicable regulations and a risk-based approach.
When considered necessary, users may be asked to:
-
update their customer information,
-
explain the purpose or nature of a transaction,
-
provide information and documents regarding the source of funds or crypto assets,
-
verify ownership of a bank account, an account on another platform or a wallet,
-
undergo additional checks for a specific transaction.
MASAK guidance regulates customer due diligence, identity verification and enhanced measures as separate areas of obligation. Applying more comprehensive measures to high-risk customers or transactions is also part of the risk-based approach.
Therefore, a user who has previously completed the KYC process being asked to provide information or documentation again at a later date is not unusual by itself.
Why Are Additional Checks Conducted If KYC Has Been Completed?
KYC is the fundamental process used to identify and verify a customer. However, financial compliance is not limited to the identity check conducted when an account is opened.
A user’s information may change over time, or new transactions may create a different risk profile. Therefore, service providers may need to continue monitoring the business relationship and update information when necessary.
In short:
-
KYC helps determine who is using the account.
-
AML checks continue to assess risks associated with the account and its transactions over time.
Therefore, a specific transaction may still be reviewed even if KYC has been completed.
What Is a Suspicious Transaction?
Under MASAK regulations, the concept of a suspicious transaction does not refer only to transactions above a specific amount.
For crypto asset service providers, suspicious transactions may be assessed without any monetary threshold. MASAK’s relevant guidance states that suspicious transactions are not limited to a single transaction and that suspicion may also arise from assessing multiple transactions together.
There is an important distinction at this point:
A transaction being
considered suspicious does not mean that the user has been proven to have committed a crime.
Suspicious transaction reporting is a compliance mechanism through which obliged institutions report transactions they consider risky to MASAK within the framework of applicable regulations.
Are an Account Freeze and a Transaction Restriction the Same Thing?
No, they are not.
-
A transaction restriction may mean that only a specific feature of the account is temporarily unavailable. For example, only cryptocurrency withdrawals may be restricted.
-
An account freeze or account restriction may have a broader scope and affect multiple transactions, such as deposits, withdrawals or trading.
In addition, legal processes such as asset freezing decisions based on applicable regulations are not the same as temporary transaction restrictions applied by platforms as part of security or risk management procedures.
Therefore, it is important to review the content of the notification shown to the user carefully.
What Should You Do When a Transaction Is Restricted?
If a transaction cannot be completed, the notification or warning displayed on the platform should be checked first. The user can review:
-
whether their KYC information is up to date,
-
their current transaction and withdrawal limits,
-
any pending Travel Rule verifications,
-
any additional information or documents requested,
-
account security notifications,
-
regulatory waiting periods.
If the platform has requested additional information, providing accurate and complete information is important for completing the review process.
However, users should not share security information such as passwords, SMS verification codes or 2FA codes with third parties claiming to represent the support team.
How Do AML Checks Contribute to User Security?
At first glance, AML and risk checks may appear to be steps that extend the transaction process. However, the purpose of these checks is not limited to ensuring regulatory compliance.
By helping detect suspicious fund movements, account takeover attempts, fraudulent activities and illegal transfers, these checks contribute to protecting both the financial system and user accounts.
For a
reliable cryptocurrency exchange, what matters is not only implementing these checks but also explaining clearly and understandably which processes users may encounter.
CoinTR also implements identity verification, transaction monitoring, transfer control and risk management processes to support user security and regulatory compliance. Whether additional information is requested from a user or a specific transaction is placed under review may vary depending on the nature of the transaction and the checks that must be applied.
FAQ
Why has my account been restricted?
Account security concerns, incomplete or outdated user information, risk checks, regulatory requirements or transactions that require review may result in certain account restrictions.
Why can’t I withdraw cryptocurrency?
A withdrawal may be temporarily unavailable due to a limit, Travel Rule requirements, a regulatory waiting period, a security check or an AML review.
I completed KYC. Why am I being asked for documents again?
KYC is not a one-time check limited to account opening. Additional information or documents may be requested later to update user information or assess specific transactions.
Does being subject to an AML review mean that I have committed a crime?
No. A transaction being subject to an additional AML or risk check does not mean that a crime has been identified. These checks are part of financial institutions’ risk-based compliance processes.
Is there a specific amount for a suspicious transaction?
A suspicious transaction assessment is not tied to a specific monetary threshold. The nature of the transaction, the user profile and other risk indicators may be evaluated together.
Why doesn’t the exchange explain in detail why a transaction was blocked?
The platform may share certain security or compliance information. However, information such as whether a suspicious transaction report has been filed cannot be disclosed to the customer under applicable regulations.
Are a limit and an account freeze the same thing?
No. A limit restricts a specific transaction amount, while an account freeze or account restriction may mean that one or more account functions are temporarily unavailable.
