What Is a Memo / Tag?

In certain cryptocurrency networks, an additional identifier is used to correctly determine which user an address belongs to during transfers. This additional information is known as a Memo, Tag, Destination Tag, or Message. This field is mandatory in networks such as XRP, XLM, EOS, and BNB (BEP2), and it ensures that transfers are directed to the correct user account when a single wallet address is shared by multiple users.
Therefore, if the receiving platform requires both an address + Memo/Tag during a transfer, it is crucial that you enter both pieces of information accurately for the transaction to be completed successfully.
 

Why Is a Memo / Tag Used?

On some cryptocurrency networks, exchange wallets operate through a shared main address. This same address can be used by hundreds of thousands of users.
For this reason, the system needs an additional “label” to distinguish which transfer belongs to which user.
Thanks to the Memo/Tag information:
  • The platform can easily identify which user the transfer belongs to.
  • Assets are directed to the correct account.
  • Confusion between users sharing the same address is prevented.
In short, a Memo is a complementary identifier just like an address.
 

What Happens If the Memo / Tag Is Not Entered?

If Memo/Tag information is required on a network and it is entered incorrectly or not entered at all:
  • The receiving platform cannot identify the transfer.
  • The transaction cannot automatically be credited to the user’s account.
  • The assets are not lost, but they may remain pending and require a manual review process.
  • The user may experience delays due to additional verification steps.
For this reason, it is essential to always check the Memo/Tag information when making transfers on networks that require it.

The following networks generally require this field:
  • XRP (Ripple): Destination Tag
  • XLM (Stellar): Memo
  • EOS : Memo
  • BNB (BEP2): Memo/Tag
